Is this the right project for Pi Motorsport?

A clear downpipe specification covering the turbo connection, material, diameter, bends, flexi, sensors, heat protection, downstream joint and the hardware that must remain.

  • Turbo conversions with no suitable production downpipe
  • Performance builds requiring a vehicle-specific route
  • Projects where an existing part fits poorly or creates clearance problems
  • Complete exhaust builds where the upstream and downstream sections must work together

The decisions that shape the result.

These are the project-specific choices discussed before the fabrication scope is approved.

01

Turbo connection

The outlet style, flange or V-band, wastegate arrangement and nearby hardware define the first section of the route.

02

Sensors and emissions hardware

Sensor position and any retained catalyst or filter must be confirmed before fabrication. Required road equipment is not treated as optional packaging.

03

Heat and clearance

Steering, driveshafts, wiring, hoses, the bulkhead and floor all need suitable clearance through engine movement and heat cycles.

04

Downstream compatibility

Diameter, joint type and position are planned around the centre and rear system so the downpipe does not create an abrupt or inaccessible connection.

The first section after the turbo

A downpipe operates in a hot, crowded part of the vehicle. Its route needs to support gas flow without sacrificing clearance, movement, sensor access or serviceability. Larger pipe is not automatically better if it forces poor bends or contact with surrounding components.

Pi Motorsport assesses the installed turbo hardware and the system that follows before confirming a design. This keeps the proposed section connected to the real build rather than a generic model description.

Materials and fabrication

High-grade T304 or 316H stainless, purge welding and mandrel bends are used where they suit the agreed application. Material, wall thickness, joint position and support are selected as one specification.

The visible weld is only one part of quality. Internal finish, flange alignment, flexi placement, sensor access and heat clearance all influence how the downpipe performs and lasts.

Road use, sensors and calibration

The intended use and retained emissions equipment must be declared before work begins. A road-car brief should identify every catalyst, filter and sensor that needs to remain and how the new section will connect around it.

Hardware changes can affect engine management. Where calibration or further diagnostics are required, responsibility should be agreed with the appropriate specialist rather than assumed as part of fabrication.

Quoting a custom downpipe

Downpipes are quoted after the vehicle, turbo connection, sensors, downstream joint and access have been assessed. Previous modifications or customer-supplied components can change the amount of adaptation required.

Send the full vehicle and engine specification, turbo details, current exhaust information and safe photographs before arranging a workshop visit. The final scope is confirmed against the car.

Completion standard

What should be clear at handover.

  1. 01Confirmed material and fabricated boundary
  2. 02Visible clearance, support and sensor review
  3. 03Leak and connection checks
  4. 04Written note of retained components and separate calibration responsibilities

Travelling to Birmingham for custom downpipes?

Our workshop is at 44a Tyburn Road in Birmingham. If you are travelling from elsewhere in the UK, send the vehicle details and intended result first. We can discuss the likely scope, appointment and workshop time before you arrange travel.

The next step

Confirm the right appointment.

For an unfamiliar vehicle or a project still being specified, start with an exhaust assessment. A complete installation slot is best reserved once the work has been agreed with the workshop.

Questions before booking

Custom downpipes: practical answers.

Downpipes require an individual quotation because turbo connections, sensors, retained emissions hardware, access and downstream joints vary significantly between vehicles.
